A powerful way to help reduce the impact of diabetes is to raise awareness – in our community, our state and all around Australia.
Every year, Diabetes SA presents, promotes and participates in awareness campaigns focused on diabetes.
We invite your involvement in the latest upcoming campaigns.
World Diabetes Day 2021
Access to diabetes care: if not now, when?
World Diabetes Day
November 14 marks a very special day in the calendar for people with
diabetes and the communities that support them. We celebrate World
Diabetes Day (WDD) on this day, as it is the birthday of Sir Frederick
Banting who co-discovered insulin along with Charles Best in 1921.
The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and
World Health Organisation (WHO) created the day,
which has become the world’s largest diabetes
awareness campaign, reaching a global audience
of over 1 billion people in more than 160 countries.
According to the IDF, the World
Diabetes Day campaign aims to be the:
-
platform to promote IDF advocacy efforts
throughout the year.
- global driver to promote the importance of taking
coordinated and concerted actions to confront
diabetes as a critical global health issue.
The campaign logo is a blue circle which signifies
the unity of the global diabetes community in
response to the diabetes epidemic. The WDD
campaign focuses on a dedicated theme that
runs for one or more years. The theme for 2021-23
is Access to Care, with a focus on the need to
improve access to diabetes care and highlight
the need for more action to prevent diabetes
and its complications.
There have been decades of innovations and
learnings, spanning technology, medication
and psychological impacts, all to improve
diabetes management. Tapping into
the latest information and support
can be life changing.
Diabetes SA is encouraging all people at risk or living with diabetes to engage with their
healthcare professionals, to access the care and support that is required to manage their condition
(or reduce their risk).
Take the next step and access the services and support available to you at Diabetes SA.
